Frequently asked questions
What does a part cost?
Every part is quoted individually: material, machining time, heat treatment, quantity and the certificates you need decide the price. Single parts and small series from specialised workshops are usually below the price an OEM asks for the original spare part — but we do not promise a fixed percentage. You receive the exact figure, delivery date and inspection scope in the written quote.
How fast?
A written quote within five working days once the drawing or the main dimensions are complete. The lead time depends on the job and is stated in the quote: a few studs welded onto a plate can be ready the next day, a turned bushing usually takes days to a few weeks, a new funnel or a large steel assembly takes months. For items marked ◆ in the configurator the period for the quote starts once the requirements are clarified. Urgent jobs for a vessel that is waiting are possible by arrangement.
I have no drawing. Can you still make the part?
Yes. Send photos with a ruler and the main dimensions for a first estimate. For manufacturing we measure the sample — the worn original or a sister part — and create a drawing that you approve. For complex shapes we 3D-scan the part through our sister product OceanSphere Additive. Worn surfaces are returned to nominal, not copied in their worn state.
Are you allowed to make parts for machines of well-known manufacturers?
We manufacture to your drawing or your sample for the equipment you own. Manufacturer names are used only to describe what a part fits; we are not an authorised dealer of these manufacturers and we do not copy their logos or markings. With your request you confirm that you may pass the documents on for manufacturing. Parts protected by a valid patent or registered design are not made against the will of the right holder — if in doubt, we ask before we quote.
Do you also repair parts or remake parts that are no longer available?
Yes. Often a repair is faster and cheaper than a new part: worn eyes are bored out and re-bushed, shafts and pins built up by welding and machined back to size, bent ladders and rails straightened, corroded areas cut out and replaced. If a part can no longer be bought, we take the old part or measure it on board, make a drawing and manufacture it as a single piece or small batch — the drawing stays with you for future orders.
Do you also make load-bearing parts?
Our focus is wear parts: bushings, rollers, sleeves, shafts, wear plates and steelwork. Load-bearing parts — for example of lifting appliances — on request: we then agree material, testing and documents with you before manufacturing and, if you wish, with your classification society, which can witness the acceptance and sign a 3.2 certificate. After fitting, the examination required for the equipment applies; for lifting appliances that is usually a proof load test under ILO Convention 152.
Who is my contract partner, and who is liable?
We are. You order from OceanSphere and receive one invoice; we place the job with a qualified workshop, check the result and stand for the agreed specification under our terms.
How confidential are my drawings?
Your documents are passed only to the workshop that quotes or makes your part, and only for that purpose. They remain your property and are not used for anything else.
Do you deliver on board, and who welds it in?
We deliver to the yard, the ship's agent, the ship chandler or the quay planned around your ETA. Prefabricated steelwork is made so that the crew or a repair yard only has to fit and weld it. If you need an experienced fitter in a German port, ask us — we arrange one on request.
Is there a minimum order?
No. One pin is a normal order. For wear parts that come back every few years we can keep the approved drawing and repeat the job on request.
Which file formats can I upload?
Drawings as PDF, DWG, DXF or TIFF; 3D models as STEP, IGES, Parasolid or STL; photos as JPG, PNG or HEIC; several files also as ZIP. Up to 10 files, 25 MB each.
Do you only work for shipping?
No. The same workshops make parts for ports, cranes, plant engineering and offshore. Send the drawing — the process is the same.
